Portfolio margin vs Reg-T
Margin is the collateral your broker requires to hold options positions. Two margin systems govern retail options trading in the US: Regulation T (Reg-T), which most accounts use by default, and Portfolio Margin, a more sophisticated system available to qualifying accounts. Understanding the difference affects what positions you can hold, how much capital you need, and how your risk is calculated.
Reg-T margin , the standard system
Reg-T is the Federal Reserve's regulation governing standard margin requirements for securities accounts. Under Reg-T:
- Initial margin to buy securities: 50%
- Maintenance margin: typically 25% (set by brokers)
- Options-specific requirements: defined by CBOE and FINRA rules on a per-strategy basis
Reg-T margin for common options strategies:

Reg-T limitations: Margin requirements are calculated per-position in isolation, without considering portfolio-level hedging. This means you may be required to hold more capital than your actual portfolio risk warrants.
Portfolio margin , the risk-based system
Portfolio margin uses risk-based calculations to determine how much margin you need. Rather than applying fixed percentage rules per position, portfolio margin evaluates the entire portfolio's net risk across multiple stress scenarios.
How it works: Your broker (using the OCC's TIMS model) stress-tests your entire portfolio against a series of hypothetical market moves (typically ±15% for individual stocks, ±6% for broad indices). The margin requirement is the maximum loss your portfolio would experience in any of these scenarios.
Key benefit: If you hold offsetting positions , a short call spread and a long put spread that profit in opposite market directions , portfolio margin recognizes that the combined risk is less than the sum of the parts. Your margin requirement decreases accordingly.
